As speculation appears to be mounting around the Economic Freedom Fighter’s (EFF) lavish gift to King AbaThembu Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, the party on Friday denied claims it had failed to disclose its funding sources.

The allegations against the party follow the release of the South African Election Commission (IEC) second quarter disclosure report, which examined donations received by political parties during the period July to September 2021.

In accordance with Law 6 of 2018 on the financing of political parties, political parties are required to disclose donations above the R100,000 threshold to the IEC.

According to the presidency earlier this year, the law, which entered into force on April 1, is a historic development for transparency and accountability in the country as it regulates public and private funding of political parties.

Speaking to the media, the EFF General Treasurer Omphile Maotwe has denied allegations the party chose not to disclose its funding sources, according to a News24 report.

“The law is different from the SARS law. The latter states that parties should only make declarations in cases where an amount above the threshold is received from a single donor,” Maotwe said.

On the issue of King Dalindyebo’s 1.8 million rand luxury gift – a brand new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé SUV – Maotwe said the party’s “good relationship with our service providers” ensured that this was possible, IOL reported.

She attributed the same reason to EFF’s ability to acquire the new Winnie Mandela house in Johannesburg for its headquarters.

“This building was acquired even before I became general treasurer. It was an old building that we have renovated [after taking a short-term loan]”Maotwe added, citing EFF’s good relationship with service providers.

“We have established relationships with our service providers (…) Through a financial provider, we came to an agreement because we had to restore the dignity of our king, and we are paying for it”, a- she declared.

While the party apparently did not receive donations greater than R100,000 in the first and second quarters, Maotwe said he received substantial donations during the period from October to November, which he has said. intends to report to IEC as part of the third quarter disclosure. Report.
