Iranian Central Bank offers support to Sri Lanka to repay loans through exports to Iran

September 25, Colombo: Central Bank of Iran (CBI) Governor Akbar Komeijani said the bank was ready to provide the necessary financial mechanisms to fund business transactions between Iran and Sri Lanka, Teheran reported Times according to the CBI portal.
“The expansion of trade and banking relations between Iran and Sri Lanka is possible on the basis of the financing of exports and imports between the two countries and the establishment of direct and indirect payment mechanisms,” said the governor of the CBI when Sri Lankan Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila met him in Tehran on Saturday.
Minister Gammanpila and the governor of the Central Bank of Iran discussed repaying loans from Sri Lanka by exporting raw materials to Iran.
Welcoming the expansion of trade between the two countries and referring to the history of trade relations between Iran and Sri Lanka, the governor of the CBI said Sri Lanka should support Iran’s interests in the international arenas as an independent country.
“The expansion of trade relations and mutual exports and imports, as well as the resolution of financial problems between the two countries on the basis of agreements and negotiations are on the agenda, and this meeting can be the first step. the development of commercial and banking relations between the two countries. Komeijani added, stressing the central bank’s support for trade between the two countries.
The governor of the CBI suggested that a working group consisting of Sri Lankan and CBI experts, businessmen and other economic actors be set up to provide ways to expand cooperation between the two countries and resolve the debt settlement issues.
The Sri Lankan official, for his part, expressed his country’s desire to expand cooperation with Iran despite US sanctions.
“Despite the limitations, we are interested in developing mutual trade and using all available capacities to advance the interests of both parties; Sri Lanka welcomes all operational proposals and solutions in this regard, ”he said.
The Sri Lankan official also welcomed the central bank’s proposals to increase trade cooperation and noted that Sri Lanka will stand alongside Iran in difficult international situations and support its interests.
