SLI joins the non-profit housing organization Downtown Emergency Service Center (DESC) to celebrate the inauguration of a permanent supportive housing project

SEATTLE, March 02, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sustainable Living Innovations (SLI) today joined the Downtown Emergency Services Center (DESC) in announcing the grand opening of DESC Green Lake, an apartment building five-story, 124-unit building at 8610 Aurora Avenue North in Seattle.

DESC has released a “virtual revolutionary” video which can be viewed by clicking here.

SLI is the design-build partner of DESC, a national leader in implementing innovative, cost-effective strategies that end homelessness. DESC and SLI won a Seattle Office of Housing bidding process for the DESC Green Lake project.

DESC Green Lake is SLI’s first building constructed using the company’s low-rise technology, which eliminates the need for external structural steel for structural support, and instead uses the strength of its prefabricated load-bearing panels to support the building.

When completed, the building will include 24/7 support services and indoor/outdoor community spaces for tenants, all single adults with disabilities and who have experienced long-term homelessness. DESC will continue to own and operate the building after completion.

SLI’s low-rise technology allows projects like DESC Green Lake to go up faster than conventionally constructed buildings and also operate with greater energy efficiency. The building will incorporate many aspects of SLI’s technology systems, including rooftop solar, gray water plumbing, waste heat recovery, ultra-efficient air conditioning and other “smart home” features. SLI uses similar technologies in its current construction of 303 Battery in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood.

“We are honored to partner with DESC on this project and appreciate the trust that DESC and the Seattle Office of Housing have placed in our innovative building system. Homelessness in Seattle is a crisis and Daniel Malone, Sondra Nielsen and their team at DESC are at the forefront of solving the problem, in partnership with the team at the Seattle Office of Housing,” said Arlan Collins, CEO of SLI. “Using our building technology to serve some of the most vulnerable members of our community allows SLI to help make our great city a better place. The sooner we can build this type of housing, the sooner we can help provide a pathway out of homelessness.”

Absher Construction and SLI have formed a joint venture to handle general contractor responsibilities.

“This innovative SLI building will become DESC’s 17th supportive housing project offering full services to help our tenants stabilize and begin to live more fulfilling lives,” said DESC CEO Daniel Malone. “DESC is proud to have continued to work throughout the chaos of the pandemic to build more supportive housing and help ease the chaos in the lives of those experiencing homelessness.

“DESC is thrilled to partner with SLI on this inventive new building type that will serve our goals of ending homelessness while providing high-quality, energy-efficient housing,” said Sondra Nielsen, Director of Facilities and DESC asset management. “We continue to pioneer housing first and what that means, especially from a building technology perspective.”

Features include solar power on the roof of the building, exterior walls and balconies of each unit, gray water and waste heat recovery systems, ultra-efficient hydronic heating and cooling systems, motors regenerative elevator systems, distributed DC power systems, and SLI’s advanced networking systems and data management platform to ensure optimal building operation.

303 Battery will be completed this fall and has been pre-sold to Equity Residential (NYSE: EQR). Equity Residential is an S&P 500 company focused on acquiring, developing and managing rental apartments located in high-density urban and suburban markets.
