By Benjamin Flowers: Opposition Leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow has condemned the recent motion tabled in the House of Representatives by the government of Belize seeking a $150 million loan from the Republic of China (Taiwan).
Barrow expressed his frustrations on Facebook, noting that the loan motion comes just three months after the $1.4 billion budget was passed.
“What does this government need $150 million for the 3 months of the new fiscal year? There is no project attached to this loan which is a gateway to corruption, cronyism and campaign financing! Barrow said.
He also called out the People’s United Party, saying he had promised to stop borrowing money, but had borrowed nearly $400 million in less than two years.
The Notice of Loan Motion was given on July 12. The US$75 million is to be split into four phases, with the first installment of US$42 million to be made this year. There would then be three installments of $11 million, split between 2023 and 2025.
