Why you should take this course
Are you a journalist, campaigner, or activist who needs to better understand how to use a company’s financial statements to find and grow stories? Do you ever find yourself stuck trying to figure out who really controls a company?
Too many journalists have a barrier of trust when it comes to financial statements.
Our new course Understanding Business Accounts is highly regarded and accredited by the Continuing Professional Development Certification Service.
Hosted by expert Finance Uncovered journalists Nick Mathiason, Ted Jeory and Simon Bowers, this is a course based on four structured online modules that will take you around 15 hours to complete over six weeks.
You will have direct access to FU trainers and have the opportunity to bring your own case studies or target companies to the table to see if we can help you develop stories.
This course isn’t just about the numbers: you’ll become a better journalist, better able to hold companies and beneficial owners to account – and you’ll have an edge over your peers.
What recent interns told us:
“I wanted a crash course that allowed me to have meaningful conversations with experts. This is exactly what it allowed me to do.
I came into the course really unsure of my financial/digital skills, but Nick and Ted were incredibly helpful and understanding from day one – answering all questions, providing great case studies which were really engaging. Moreover, it gave me confidence to follow the course without doubting myself and I was very happy with the result of the mission!
“It was a great introduction for a beginner like me and overall it made working with numbers a lot more interesting than I ever thought. I went from being a journalist who hated jargon accountant to anyone who could challenge me to figure it out. And all thanks to your course materials and guidance from the course instructors.”
How our facilitated e-learning course is structured
Once you have registered, we will send you usernames and passwords to log in to modules on our Moodle learning platform one day before the course start date.
October 12: We will have a group kick-off meeting at 12pm London time on Zoom. We will welcome you and explain to you throughout the course. At this stage, you can also suggest your own target companies that we may be able to help you with.
October 19: Our first Zoom seminar to discuss and complete the Module 1 learnings you need to complete by this date.
November 2: Our second Zoom seminar to discuss how you found Module 2, the biggest of the four modules that dives into the three main financial statements. We will offer you simple tests during this seminar.
November 9: Our third Zoom seminar to discuss and test you on module 3, which largely deals with notes to accounts. After that, you enter module 4 and take our mission.
November 23: Our last seminar to discuss your journey and our feedback on your mission.
