FromSoftware’s new game, Elden Ring, can combine the moral and political complexity of Game of Thrones with the combat and drama of Souls games.
Ancient ring could gain a lot by borrowing from the history toolbox of Game Of Thrones author George RR Martin. Ancient ring, the next expected release of FromSoftware breaks new ground by combining the dark aesthetic and iconic and influential playstyle of their Dark souls, Demonic souls, Sekiro, and Transmitted by blood franchises with world-building famous TV writer and sci-fi / fantasy novelist George RR Martin.
One thing Martin turned out to do well in his A song of ice and fire novels fill the world with traditions and minutiae. FromSoftware’s games do this too, in their idiosyncratic fashion, with descriptions of items and other features rather than an abundance of dialogue. However, an occasional criticism of FromSoftware games is that it keeps their stories in many ways further behind in the background, and with Ancient ring By touting the name of George RR Martin, it is possible that there is also a more traditional narrative structure.
While Ancient ring will undoubtedly share gameplay elements with Transmitted by blood and Sekiro, he follows in the path of the high fantasy of Souls Games. Nominally, Ancient ring invokes The Lord of the Rings, and maybe the FromSoftware and George RR Martin partnership means that Ancient ringthe story will also find ways to borrow character types and themes from the story of Game Of Thrones.
Elden Ring could borrow murky morality from Game of Thrones
One thing that Game Of Thrones focuses on gray areas of morality (especially with regard to those in power and the corruption of institutions), such as the lack of honor among the king’s guard, the decadence of King Robert, or the Freys and Bolton betraying guests and allies at the Red Marriage. Ancient ringThe premise of centers around a world ruled by the demigod offspring of Queen Marika the Eternal, each corrupted by shards of the Elden Ring they wear, known as the Great Runes. This already seems to be a direct metaphor for how power can corrupt.
Ancient ringThe premise of s calls for its protagonist, the Tarnished, to restore the Ring of Elden and become Lord of Elden, so perhaps the cost of power can be felt in forging and breaking alliances to get there. at this point, helping knights like Jaime Lannister and Jorah Mormont restore their honor, or free princesses in captive marriages. Or maybe they can be drawn into this quest for power through a blood connection with former rulers, like Daenerys and Jon Snow.
Borrow Game Of Thrones does not want to say Ancient ring must be a story that follows the children of the nobility closely as they seek revenge for the destruction of their lands and homes in Ancient ring Lands Between. Rather, it means Ancient ring can use a narrative with more traditional literary conventions and themes while continuing FromSoftware’s contemporary design. The studio creates open-world action games where the narrative is something felt and played, where cinematic qualities are often experienced rather than just watched.
Ancient ring does not need to take it all Game Of Thrones show where A song of ice and fire books. The show took an already violent book series and increased cases of sexual violence while downplaying their diversity. The books themselves include a myriad of Easter Eggs in the form of characters, lands, and stories in the universe that reference actual characters from JRR Tolkien to Bill Belichick. Ancient ring don’t need to watch Game Of Thrones for everything, especially given its pedigree – there are plenty of FromSoftware games out there that it will no doubt borrow concepts from. But it would be well served by incorporating the most significant themes of George RR Martin’s epic saga that already fit FromSoftware’s design philosophy.
